Missouri winters can bring snow, ice, extreme cold, and blizzard conditions. These hazards can cause power outages, travel disruptions, property damage, and life-threatening health risks such as hypothermia, frostbite, and carbon monoxide poisoning. Preparing in advance can protect you, your family, and your property.
Winter Weather Alerts
Winter Storm Watch: Severe weather possible within 12–36 hours. Prepare now.
Winter Storm Warning: Severe snow or ice expected within 12–24 hours. Take shelter.
Blizzard Warning: Strong winds with blowing snow expected for 3 or more hours. Visibility near zero and dangerous wind chills are likely.

Before the Storm: Home Preparation
Stock an emergency kit with:
Food and water (3–5 days)
Flashlights, batteries, radio
Medications, first aid kit
Blankets, extra clothing
Cell phone charger or power bank
Make a communication plan:
Identify a meeting place
Choose an out-of-state contact
Know local shelter locations
Vehicle Preparation
Winterize your vehicle:
Check battery, tires, fluids, and wipers
Keep at least half a tank of gas
Store a car emergency kit with:
Blankets, warm clothing
Non-perishable food and water
Flashlight, scraper, shovel, jumper cables
Sand or cat litter for traction
Cell charger, maps, and matches
During the Storm
Stay indoors and off roads when possible
Use only properly vented heat sources
Never use a generator indoors or in an attached garage
Avoid candles; use flashlights
If you lose heat, wear layered clothing and close off unused rooms
Go to a public warming center if necessary (dial 211 for locations)

Ensure animals have shelter and access to unfrozen water
