Lightning Safety
“If thunder roars, go indoors.” Lightning strikes can be deadly and no place outdoors is safe when thunderstorms are nearby. Always remain indoors until 30 minutes after the last sound of thunder.
Indoor Lightning Safety Tips
Once inside, reduce your risk of injury by avoiding anything that can conduct electricity:
Do not use corded phones unless it’s an emergency. Cordless and cell phones are safe.
Avoid plumbing: Do not shower, bathe, wash dishes, or do laundry.
Stay away from windows, doors, porches, and concrete walls or floors.
Unplug electronics before the storm arrives to prevent power surge damage.
Use a battery-powered NOAA Weather Radio for emergency updates.
When Thunderstorms Are in the Forecast
Postpone outdoor activities.
Go indoors or shelter in a hard-topped vehicle (avoid touching metal inside).
Rubber tires and shoes do NOT protect you from lightning.
Close windows and secure outdoor items to prevent wind damage.
Turn off air conditioners and unplug sensitive electronics early.
Avoid These Dangerous Areas
During a thunderstorm, stay clear of:
Isolated trees, hilltops, and open fields
Bodies of water, beaches, and boats
Small shelters or sheds in open spaces
Metal objects like tractors, motorcycles, golf carts, clubs, and bicycles
