Thunderstorm Safety

Thunderstorms are common in Missouri, especially during spring and summer. While most last 30–60 minutes, some become severe and produce large hail, damaging winds, flash flooding, or tornadoes.

A severe thunderstorm meets at least one of the following:

  • Winds ≥ 58 mph

  • Hail ≥ 1 inch

  • A tornado is present or forming


Alerts to Know

  • Watch – Conditions are favorable for severe storms. Stay weather aware.

  • Warning – Severe weather is occurring or imminent. Take immediate action.

Before the Storm

  • Monitor weather forecasts and alerts.

  • Secure outdoor objects and trim dead branches.

  • Unplug electronics and avoid using wired appliances.

  • Close windows, blinds, and doors.

  • Review your family emergency plan.


During the Storm

  • Stay indoors and away from windows.

  • Avoid plumbing and corded electronics.

  • Do not use elevators.

  • Postpone travel.

If caught outside:

  • Avoid open areas, isolated structures, and metal objects.

  • Seek low ground if no shelter is nearby—watch for flash flooding.

  • In a vehicle, pull over safely and stay inside away from hazards.


After the Storm

  • Watch for downed power lines, tree limbs, and debris.

  • Report hazards and damage to local officials.

  • Be cautious of flooded roads—Turn Around, Don’t Drown.

  • Continue monitoring weather for additional storms or warnings.
