Thunderstorm Safety
Thunderstorms are common in Missouri, especially during spring and summer. While most last 30–60 minutes, some become severe and produce large hail, damaging winds, flash flooding, or tornadoes.
A severe thunderstorm meets at least one of the following:
Winds ≥ 58 mph
Hail ≥ 1 inch
A tornado is present or forming
Alerts to Know
Watch – Conditions are favorable for severe storms. Stay weather aware.
Warning – Severe weather is occurring or imminent. Take immediate action.

Before the Storm
Monitor weather forecasts and alerts.
Secure outdoor objects and trim dead branches.
Unplug electronics and avoid using wired appliances.
Close windows, blinds, and doors.
Review your family emergency plan.
During the Storm
Stay indoors and away from windows.
Avoid plumbing and corded electronics.
Do not use elevators.
Postpone travel.
If caught outside:
Avoid open areas, isolated structures, and metal objects.
Seek low ground if no shelter is nearby—watch for flash flooding.
In a vehicle, pull over safely and stay inside away from hazards.
After the Storm
Watch for downed power lines, tree limbs, and debris.
Report hazards and damage to local officials.
Be cautious of flooded roads—Turn Around, Don’t Drown.
Continue monitoring weather for additional storms or warnings.
